Naming Ionic Compounds
<---Previous Assignment - Next Unit--->

Time Length
  • not sure
Instructions
  • Write the names of the compounds below. Use the spellings below to help. Useon the second part.
  • Nitrogen = Nitride; Sulfur = Sulfide; Oxygen = Oxide; Chlorine = Chloride; Fluorine = Fluoride; Selenium = Selenide; Bromine = Bromide; Iodine = Iodide; Phosphorus = Phosphide

Worksheet
  • Write the name of the first one, then the second, but follow the rules below.
    • Change endings of Representative Ions to "ide"
    • Determine the charge of Transition Ions and use roman numerals to identify it. Example below.

Explanation for naming Transition Metals.
Iron (Fe) is a transition element. Therefore we do not know its charge. Phosphorus is a Representative Ion. Therefore, because of its group we know it has a -3 charge. There are 2 Phosphoruses,so if we multiply the charge (3) times how many there are (2) that gives us a total charge of 6 on the right side. (the sign doesnt really matter.) The right side charge and the left side charge balance out so we start with a total charge of 6 on the left. Divide that by the number of Irons (3). That gives us a charge for each iron of 2. Thus we know that the name of the Iron is Iron (II).
